Monterey is the 18th major release by Apple and was announced for the first time on WWDC21. It is the successor of macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.

MacOS Monterey is supported on Apple products (iMac and Mac) and systems based on Intel or Apple Silicon. Apple Silicon was announced on WWDC 20 and is present on Mac Book Air, Mac Book Pro, and more.

Still, for the installation, you will need macOS Monterey Installer. Without installer, you can use ISO or DMG file of macOS Monterey; however, the installation will get way complicated. Another great thing about using the Installer will be the wide range of hardware support which enables you to perform the installation on most of the computers.

Without macOS Monterey Installer you won’t be able to perform the installation; else you will need to perform the installation on VMware Workstation or any other virtualization app.

So, here is the simplest and easiest way to install macOS Monterey on your PC.

Requirements to run macOS Monterey on PC

So, what is the requirement to run macOS Monterey on my PC? For running the only macOS as compared to run inside a virtual machine, you will need fewer specs.

45 GB of storage is enough to run it however, having 60 GB is recommended. We would recommend you use SDD instead of a Disk drive for improved performance.

A USB drive with 16 GB storage is also needed. Later the USB will be bootable with macOS Monterey.
Any 2 GB graphic card is also required.

Other required items

You will also need to create an EFI folder and download OpenCore Configuration. Here is How to create open core EFI? and you can download OpenCore Configuration from the internet.

Remember one thing you can’t just start the installation directly. You will also need to have access to a Mac. Inside your Mac, download the OpenCore Configuration and create an EFI folder.

Make your USB bootable

Plugin your USB drive and go to Disk Utility. Select the USB drive and click on Erase button. If your USB is not shown, click on the box-like icon beside the disk utility text on top. Click on Show all devices.

Enter your Name, Format (Mac OS X Extended ‘Journal’), and Scheme as GUI Partition.

Now, exit the window and search for Terminal in Spotlight. Open Terminal and type:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/Createinstallmedia –volume /

to apply the command, the system will ask for your password. Type your password and for the confirmation type Y and quit Terminal.

Mount the EFI folder on your USB

Here you will need to run OpenCore Configuration and make a Mount Partition of EFI on Disk Identifier: disk (your USB drive) and quit the app.

Copy the EFI of your system and copy ESP to your USB. Once you have copied the EFI folder and ESP, then you will need to copy the OpenCore Configurator to your USB too.

Configure the BIOS

If you have reached here then you have completed all the difficult tasks. Some steps are still remaining which we will tackle now;

Plugin your USB drive on your PC and Power ON your PC. Go to your BIOS and make all settings default. Again restart your system and go to BIOS. In BIOS change the following:

PXE Boot To LANEnabled
USB BootEnabled
Boot modeUEFI
XMPEnabled/ profile 1 (if avail)

Configure BIOS

Once all the settings are made, go to Exit and Save Changes, and exit.

Installation of macOS Monterey on PC

Your system will restart again. This time boot your system with your USB drive. You can do it when your system reaches the boot menu, where you will need to select the USB drive.

In this step, you will need to select your Hard drive. Select any of the hard drives that you want to perform the installation of macOS Monterey on. Format the drive and move to the next step.

You can format the disk by choosing the Disk Utility section, click on View and Show all devices. Select the driver you want to perform the installation click on Format.

Click on Install macOS and start the installation.

Choose the systems Language accordingly and click on the right arrow button. Select Install macOS 12 and Continue to installation.

Your installation will take place. Installation might take 30-60 minutes and during the installation, your system will restart many times. So take a break.

Setting UP

  • Select Country and click on Continue.
  • Pick one of the Keyboard layouts and click on Continue.
  • Turn ON/OFF the Accessibility features like vision, motor, hearing, and cognitive. To skip you can click on Not Now.
  • For internet connection select one of the options, I have selected Local network (Ethernet) then clicked on Continue.
  • In Data & Privacy tab, read and click on Continue.
  • Accessibility like vision, motor, hearing, and cognitive will appear, click on Continue.
  • Apple ID will be needed, click on Set Up Later or you can set it up.
  • Agree the Terms and Conditions by Apple.
  • Type out your Full name, Account name, Password, Hint then click on Continue.
  • In Make This your New Mac tab, click on Continue.
  • On-Screen Timer will appear, click on Set Up Later.
  • Check Siri and click on Continue.
  • Choose you Look tab will appear. Select one of your preferred themes out of Light, Dark or Auto and click on Continue.

Post Installation

Mount the USB and ESP on your macOS.

Copy the EFI folder and paste the EFI folder on your macOS.

Ok, now eject all the ESP and USB drives.
